Surgical technologists are healthcare professionals who specialize in providing surgical services to patients with expertise in general surgery as well as other areas such as cardiac and orthopedic surgery. While not involved directly in the operation or procedure, a surgical technologist ensures that patients are physically ready for their procedures and have everything they need from anesthesia to medication before proceeding through their pre-operative checklists.

There are many reasons why someone might become a surgical technologist. First, they make sure that the operating room is set up with all of the necessary equipment and supplies. Second, they have to be in charge of administering anesthesia (usually in the form of a gas). Finally, if a surgery requires more than one stage – meaning there’s more than one surgery – then they will also have to administer anesthesia at these stages as well.

How Do I Become a Surgical Technologist?
The minimum education to become a surgical technologist is a certificate or associate degree in the field of medical technology. At many hospitals and private practice offices, employees work on a rotating basis–working up to 40 hours per week in different departments such as pre-operative procedures, operating room (or O.R.), or recovery unit. A high school diploma or GED equivalent might be required in some cases by employers.

How Much Does It Cost to Become a Surgical Technologist?
You will need to enroll in a program at your local community college or vocational school. At these schools, it usually takes about 18 months to two years to complete training in general surgical technology; however, the length of time can vary depending on your previous education or experience. Programs range from 600 hours to 2200 hours long and cost between $1,000-$5,000 dollars per year depending on whether you are part-time or full-time enrolled student.
